Common Questions

Don't chickens have germs?

Sure. Germs are a fact of life. Not all germs are bad though! We believe it is best to teach kids about germs-what they are and how to get rid of them. Chicken poop. Dirty socks. Food. Our Germ Science package covers it all. Knowledge is power. Instead of fearing germs, we see it as a great practical science teaching opportunity.

Aren't chickens a lot of work to take care of?

Chickens take approximately one hour a day to take care of. Chores are a long-lost part of youth. Teaching work and responsibility is a good thing: Invest time and energy in, get joy, satisfaction, and colorful eggs. Coops and Gardens Educational Partnerships is a great before- or after-school program addition.

Should kids' parents sign a waiver?

Yes. We offer a draft form of waiver, but unfortunately, we cannot make any guarantees.

How can chickens help kids reach nonfiction reading goals?

If there is one thing we know about kids…it’s that they are OBSESSED with chickens! We have never met a child who does not want to know everything about chickens, for one reason or another.

Chickens are a great topic for kids to get excited about. Learning is much easier when it is fun, so our goal is to make learning about chickens fun. Our kids’ programs include a weekly investigative question (about chickens) paired with class discussion so students can find answers like real scientists and discuss answers with their peers, according to the scientific method.

Other ways we help kids get excited about reading is by reading with chickens! Reading out loud to chickens (or other pets, babies, stuffed animals, or a nonjudgmental adults) helps kids gain confidence in their skills. Practice makes perfect!

Can you have chickens with other animals?

Chickens are a great addition to any family or farm. Just as with any other animal, it is best to introduce a new chicken to any other animals they will be interacting with, but thankfully we have videos to help you!
